Lawmakers will gather on Capitol Hill Friday with one order of business before them -- but it is a matter that has generated public interest like few others.
Public interest, and in many cases, public outrage.
It is the Legislature's only opportunity to make right the wrong it did to the state's open records laws, and KSL believes repeal of House Bill 477 is the Legislature's only course of action.
Some lawmakers say they are reluctant to rescind the law until a replacement is available.
We say replacement bills -- assuming one is even determined to be necessary -- may come about in the future, after the kind of debate and deliberation that was so lacking in the passage of the original measure.
There is a mechanism now in place to consider changes to the law, and all parties so far have demonstrated good faith toward the premise of a healthy, open and thorough review.
KSL applauds those efforts, and we applaud the courage of those lawmakers who have publicly apologized for their original votes, acknowledging they were contrary to the wishes of their constituencies.
Today offers an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start over. It is an opportunity lawmakers should not cast away.
