SALT LAKE CITY -- A bill that would make it illegal to purchase, possess or use various synthetic drugs in Utah will be amended sometime Wednesday to include Ivory Wave, a popular methamphetamine derivative that is marketed as bath salts, the sponsor said.

Rep. Gage Froerer, R-Huntsville, is leading the charge and said it is difficult to keep up with manufacturers, who change their formulas every time a new law is made.

The bill, HB23, will add at least 17 different synthetic drug derivatives to Utah's existing controlled substance schedules, including Spice, Ivory Wave and its variants. The bill has passed the House and is awaiting debate in the Senate.
