PROVO -- An Orem man who fatally stabbed his wife in January has been sentenced to one to 15 years in prison.
Fourth District Judge Claudia Laycock on Wednesday sentenced Roberto Aguirre Ramirez, 27, on a manslaughter charge. He was also sentenced to two separate terms of zero to five years in prison for two separate counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Laycock ordered that the sentences be served concurrently and that he be given credit for the 311 days he has spent in jail.
Ramirez was originally charged with murder in the death of his wife, Norma Villalobos-Guzman. Prosecutors reduced the charge to manslaughter as part of a plea deal.
Prosecutors say the pair had a "mutually volatile relationship" and that Ramirez's wife may have been the attacker at one point in the fight that led to her death. It happened hours after the couple had received an eviction notice.
