KAYSVILLE -- Students and teachers at Kaysville Junior High honored their former vice principal on Veterans Day.

Senior Master Sgt. Richard Miller returned home from Iraq last summer, and Thursday the school held an assembly to thank him for his service.

Miller served a six-month deployment to Iraq with the Air National Guard and acted as Kaysville Junior High School's vice principal for 13 years before he was deployed in January.

Miller served as a heavy equipment operator in Iraq for six months. In the special assembly, he shared pictures from his time in Iraq. He ran a heavy equipment shop on base and repaired runways and roads.

"I wanted to give them a small slice of what we did over there, share that with them," Miller said.

"We're kids, and we don't know what's going on, and I thought it was great how he could tell us about it," said eighth-grader Ashley Nielson.

"I thought the assembly was really good; good to have him home," said student Tag Steele.

Miller told students he ran into several Kaysville Junior High alumni who are now serving in the military. He said Veterans Day is about reflection and remembering the service of thousands of men and women.

"I represent a very small part of the service that goes on for our country, and it allows us at Kaysville Junior High...for me to share that with them so they know how I feel about service to the country," Miller said.

Before Miller left, school administrators gave him their American flag and he flew it on his base in Iraq. He brought it back, and it now flies in front of the school.

Thursday, the school presented Miller with a flag it had flown while he was gone and thanked him for his service.

Miller has spent 22 years in the Air National Guard and this was his fourth deployment. He now works at Syracuse Junior High and says it was nice to see his students again.
