WEST VALLEY CITY -- Five known gang members are in police custody after a West Valley City homeowner spotted them spraying graffiti on a barn.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Thursday near 3100 S. Redwood Road. The homeowner chased the men off and called police, who later arrested the suspects.

Lt. Scott Buchanan with the West Valley City Police Department said community members play a crucial role in solving crimes like this.

"Sometimes lower-level property crime investigations lead to bigger cases. It's always important that the community is alert and contact police when they see suspicious activity," he said.

The suspects may face charges related to graffiti and concealed weapons officers found in their vehicle.
