SALT LAKE CITY -- Thousands of Utah students read the 20 minute standard Thursday. Many read from the same book, while others read so much they had a party.

Thursday morning, first lady Jeanette Herbert read to students at Salt Lake's Edison Elementary School. She had a giant-size copy of "Snowy Day," by Ezra Keats.

University of Utah mascot Swoop joined KSL News Thursday to congratulate students at Layton's Ellison Park Elementary School for meeting their reading goals.

Herbert was taking part in the movement Read for the Record, where students are encouraged to read the same book on the same day. Last year, more than 2 million students read in the program.

So, while Salt Lake students listened to "Snowy Day," they appropriately donned mittens and sipped hot cocoa.

Organizers hope this focus on literacy sends a message about the importance of parents reading to their children.

KSL News sent the same message in a different way to parents in Layton. Chopper 5 "swooped" down on Ellison Park Elementary School with University of Utah mascot Swoop to celebrate.

PTA leaders at Ellison Park Elementary have registered hundreds of students into KSL's and Deseret Media Companies' Read Today program. As a reward, Chopper 5 landed, and Swoop led a reading pep rally.

We honored top readers and encouraged students to keep up the good work.

Your school could win a Chopper 5 reading party too. Register your children in the Read Today program at www.readtoday.com and start logging their reading minutes.

Also, on readtoday.com, you can read a digital version of Snowy Day and take part in Read for the Record.
