SALT LAKE CITY -- The economy is one reason why the University of Utah's School of Business is making some changes to advisement, recruitment, curriculum and more.

Recently Businessweek magazine ranked the David Eccles School of Business 109th out of 111 spots on the list for undergraduate programs. It's part of the reason why the school is making changes to advisement.

In June, six of the school's seven academic advisers were let go and the office was revamped to put some of the responsibilities in other places.

"It used to be the case that our undergraduate office was doing a lot of career advisement and recruiting, and we've hired other people to take some of that work. Our advisers are now just advisers," said Associate Dean Scott Schaefer.

Schaefer said they got a fresh set of eyes to analyze the school when a new dean took over 15 months ago. That means other changes are coming, including considered curriculum modifications.

"Our undergrad curriculum hadn't been reviewed in a while," Schaefer said. "We're looking at ways to tie ideas together a little bit better, we are looking at ways to encourage students to take more innovative approaches to problem solving, and we are emphasizing entrepreneur aspects of our program."

The business school is also looking at expanding career services and expanding the recruiting efforts to draw in better students.

Schaefer says the school wants to make sure students have the best education and are prepared to enter the workforce in this economy.
