SALT LAKE CITY -- Pop history quiz: What happened in Salt Lake City on Sept. 23, 50 years ago? Then-presidential candidate John F. Kennedy made a campaign visit to Utah.

Kennedy had already been selected as the Democratic nominee and was crisscrossing the nation on campaign stops.

While here 50 years ago, Kennedy met with then-LDS Church President David O. McKay and spoke to a very packed house at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

It was a quick visit, though. He left the following morning. But he would return to Salt Lake as president in 1963 -- two months before he was killed.
