(KSL News) -- Deseret tortoises in Washington County will receive a home makeover.

The Washington County Commission approved the purchase of a hundred extra acres of land to protect desert tortoises, and also a few other animal and plant species.

Federal money will be used to buy the land. The sale price hasn't been disclosed.

The extra acreage will be added to the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.

The commission also agreed to create more trails in the area.
