HEBER CITY -- Some of the best sheepdogs from around the world are back in Utah, competing in the Bank of the West Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championships in Heber City this holiday weekend.

Border collies, Australian shepherds and other herding dogs from 15 countries are competing, along with their handlers. The three-day competition began Saturday, with dogs herding groups of wild sheep through the course.

Each day, the number of competitors will be narrowed down, and by Monday, only 15 will remain to advance to the Supreme Grand Championship.

"You gotta have a pretty good dog," said trainer Ron Enzeroth from Dublin, Texas. "Some days you gotta have a little bit of luck. Like right now the wind's blowing, the dogs don't hear as well. It's better to draw up when it's quiet. The sheep are usually more quiet and run better."

The competition includes a dog-jumping pool, Frisbee catching, duck herding and hoop jumping. Spectators can also enjoy food, storytelling and pony rides.

The Soldier Hollow competition is an "invitation-only" event, known as one of the foremost sheepdog championships in the world. This is the seventh year the competition has been held at Soldier Hollow.

An estimated 25,000 spectators are expected to attend. The competition runs through Monday.
