SPRINGVILLE -- Lightning struck a girl in Springville Friday night. The 12-year-old was watching Springville High School play a football game against Wooster High School (Reno, NV).
The lightning struck just outside the stadium, near the northwest corner of the field. Game officials immediately called time out and the field and bleachers were evacuated.
When the lightning struck, police say it traveled underground approximately 100 yards, past light poles, fences and stadium bleachers, coming up through the frame of a tent-booth, which the young girl was holding- trying to support it in the wind.
The jolt instantly knocked her to the ground.
Witnesses say the girl was conscious and alert when medics arrived, and was in stable condition when she went to the hospital.
The girl complained that her left arm and side felt weak, but hospital personnel say her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening or permanent.
The game was eventually continued; Springville went on to win 40-0.
