SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake City Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a tax increase to generate $2 million for the district.
The Deseret News reports the board will adopt a transportation levy, which will bring in $1.5 million. It will add $5.23 per $100,000 of home value. The remaining $500,000 will come from an increased judgment levy.
The $2 million is just a portion of the $9.5 million shortfall the district faced in the spring. Officials say without this tax increase the district would have had to make further cuts to its already tight budget.
The decision was made at Tuesday's Truth in Taxation hearing. The paper says about 10 people spoke at the meeting, most in opposition to the tax increases.
