Gene Kennedy reporting A California prisoner was arraigned Monday morning for allegedly murdering a Utah man at a gas station 21 years ago.

It was breakthroughs in DNA evidence that led detectives to Glenn Griffin. Investigators charged him with stabbing and beating Bradley Perry to death at a Texaco gas station in Box Elder County two decades ago.

Griffin is serving time in a California federal prison on weapons charges. Authorities brought him back to Utah Friday.

Griffin heard the charges against him this morning in Brigham City.

Prosecutors say Griffin robbed and murdered Bradley Perry in 1984, when the young man was working graveyard at a gas station in Perry, Utah.

Right after the murder, customers say a man posing as a gas station clerk handed them dollar bills with blood on it. Those eyewitnesses went to police but for years the case stumped investigators, until DNA technology evolved.

Detectives say it was Glenn Griffin's blood on those dollar bills.

If a jury convicts him he could get the death penalty.

Today's court appearance was mostly a formality. There is no plea from Griffin at this point. He only told the judge he couldn't afford an attorney and needed one.

The Perry family was not in the courtroom and didn't felt comfortable going on-camera at this point. But the victim's brother, Lee Perry, told KSL this: "I'm glad there's good viable evidence against Glenn Griffin. It certainly appears he was involved in some way. Knowing that there's been progress gives me peace of mind."
