SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Republicans overwhelmingly endorsed Gov. Gary Herbert for the November ballot, while Democrats endorsed their challenger, Peter Corroon, by a simple voice vote.

Corroon, the Salt Lake County mayor, is running with a Republican on his ticket in an effort to appeal to voters in heavily Republican Utah. State lawmaker Sheryl Allen says voters are tired of partisan politics and that Corroon is a moderate whose appeal crosses party lines.

"I don't intend to change parties," she said. "I'm not quite sure what's going to happen on interim day, which is May 19, but I have a firm conviction that this is the right team for Utah."

Corroon says while it may seem strange to have a Democrat and Republican running together on the same ticket, there is no other option.

Republican Sen. Bob Bennett was thrown out of office Saturday by delegates at the Utah GOP convention in a stunning defeat for a once-popular three-term incumbent who fell victim to a growing conservative movement nationwide.

"The thing I've heard most from our citizens is they want political parties to work together," he said. "They're sick of the in-fighting and shrill voices. They want us to work together, and that's the message we're sending together."

The November election will decide who serves the remaining two years of former Gov. Jon Huntsman's term. Huntsman resigned in August to become U.S. ambassador to China. Herbert took over his seat.

Herbert got nearly 71 percent of votes among 3,370 delegates at the Utah GOP convention Saturday.

Lt. Gov. Greg Bell is his running mate.

Herbert leads Corroon in polls.
