NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have signed Tim Shaw to a one-day contract as the former NFL linebacker continues his battle against Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS.
The Titans announced the signing on their website Wednesday and called Shaw a "Titan for life."
The 32-year-old Shaw played in the NFL for Carolina (2007), Jacksonville (2008), Chicago (2009) and Tennessee (2010-12).
Shaw, a former Titans special-teams captain, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in April 2014. ALS is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
He announced his diagnosis in a video posted on the Titans' website in the summer of 2014 and then poured ice water over his head as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness to fight ALS.
