COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers have released kicker Caleb Sturgis and promoted Michael Badgley from the practice squad. Sturgis' release came after he missed two extra points and a field goal in Sunday's 25-17 win over Seattle. The six-year veteran is the first kicker since the Raiders' Jim Breech in 1979 to miss a PAT and field goal in three straight games.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have formally introduced Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward as their new manager today. It comes more than a week after Los Angeles lost in the World Series for the second year in a row. Texas had been the last team to do that, in 2010 and 2011. Woodward says he feels the real pain of Rangers fans.

UNDATED (AP) — Novak Djokovic is back at No. 1 in the ATP rankings after a two-year absence. He's the first man in nearly two decades to rise to the top spot after being outside the top 20 in the same season. Djokovic moved up from No. 2 to overtake Rafael Nadal today.

LONDON (AP) — Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the season-ending ATP Finals because of an abdominal injury, and he's had surgery today on his right ankle. Nadal announced on Twitter that he is done for the year, citing the same stomach muscle issue that forced him to withdraw from last week's Paris Masters. He said he decided to have the ankle operation so he can start 2019 healthy.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Seibu Lions have agreed to post pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, clearing the way for the 27-year-old left-hander to negotiate with teams in Major League Baseball. Since Kikuchi cannot file for international free agency until 2020, he needed Seibu's approval in order to use the posting system to move to the majors.
