LOGAN, Utah -- All Stew Morrill wanted to do when he was hired by Utah State was have enough success to keep his job.
Ten years later, Morrill has more wins than any other Aggie coach.
Morrill passed E. Lowell Romney with his 226th coaching victory at Utah State when the Aggies beat Boise State 82-78 Thursday night.
"When I came here, I kept telling myself 'I can't fail here. I can't come home and fail," Morrill said. "Now it will be harder for people to say I failed."
Jaycee Carroll scored 29 points and almost joined his coach in the Utah State record book. Carroll needs just two more points to break the career scoring record at Utah State (13-5, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference).
Carroll can pass Greg Grant's mark of 2,127 career points when the Aggies host Idaho on Saturday. His coach would have rather seen him do it Thursday.
"That would have been great if Jaycee would have broken the record, too. Then they could have cut my ceremony by 90 percent and share the accolades," Morrill said.
Gary Wilkinson added 21 and the Aggies made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win for Morrill.
Carroll came close to joining him in the record book despite not scoring his first points of the game until 7:50 remained in the first half. He finished 9-for-14 and scored 15 on 3-pointers.
Carroll should have his moment on Saturday. He let Morrill have the spotlight Thursday.
"Coach talked to me in practice the other day and said, 'I won't worry about it if you won't," Carroll said.
Matt Bauscher scored 24 to lead Boise State (12-5, 3-2). Tyler Tiedeman added 20 points, Reggie Larry scored 14 and Matt Nelson had 11 points for the Broncos.
Boise State had a 13-8 lead early in the game before USU went on a 16-2 run and took a 24-15 edge with 6:05 left in the half. The Broncos closed the gap to 30-28, but Carroll scored five straight and the Aggies led 37-31 at halftime.
Morrill is 226-80 at Utah State and has a career record of 444-218. Morrill also coached Montana and Colorado State and has just one losing season in his career.
