Gardner-Webb holds off Charleston Southern 78-76

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Jerome Hill scored 23 points, including a go-ahead jumper with 33 seconds to play, as Gardner-Webb held off Charleston Southern for a 78-76 victory on Wednesday night.

Gardner-Webb (17-13, 10-5 Big South) got off to a hot start, hitting 16 of 30 shots in the first half, including all four of its 3-pointers. The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped to a 45-34 lead at the intermission.

Charleston Southern, however, found its collective hot hand in the second half, making 15 of 23 (65.2 percent) from the field and 5 of 7 from deep.

Gardner-Webb held a 57-47 advantage with 13 minutes left, before a 16-7 run by the Charleston Southern (12-16, 6-9) trimmed its deficit to 64-63 6 minutes later.

The Buccaneers' Arlon Harper tied the game at 75 on a 3-pointer with 66 seconds remaining before Hill's jumper gave Gardner-Webb the lead for good.

Harper paced Charleston Southern with 17 points.
