Freshmen and transfers report to camp on Friday morning, with veterans reporting later in the day. Both groups will take physicals that day, and be together for a team activity that night.

Saturday, camp's first full day is scheduled to begin with the more-or-less-traditional "beep test" in the morning, then it's afternoon team and position meetings, followed by the first practice (helmets only). As has been customary, freshmen and transfers will start and end practice a half-hour before the vets.

The L.A. Times cites the Riverside Press-Enterprise in coming up with these morsels from UCLA OC Norm Chow:

*On not having QB Pat Cowan this season: "Pat Cowan the human being was as important to us as Pat Cowan the football player."

*On Ben Olson: "Pat and Ben had a tough time in their careers because they were always looking over their shoulders. Hopefully Ben won't have to do that and will be relaxed when he plays. You don't want him to feel unsure. He has to know that even if he doesn't play well, that he is still the guy."

*On the offensive line: "I think we have a good offensive line. I don't think we have the depth. Do we have enough good players is the problem. No one is going to feel sorry for us. We just have to go do it."

*On tailback Kahlil Bell, who Chow said is an NFL-quality running back: "He is a major player in all of this. I really think he is critical to our success."

Another basketball scheduling note: for the first time in 10 years, BYU will not play Southern Utah. After Roger Reid took the SUU job last year, there was some question as to whether the two teams would meet in the 2007-08 season--of course they did, and BYU won 70-55 in Reid's return to the Marriott Center (improving to 11-0 alltime against the Thunderbirds). This season, Reid's T-Birds are scheduled to play Utah State, Weber State and UVU, but neither BYU nor Utah. SUU will also play MWC member UNLV.
