Both Sides of the Ball Make Big Plays in Final WSU Fall Football Scrimmage

OGDEN, UTAH - Players on both sides of the line made big plays in the final Fall football scrimmage for the Weber State University Wildcats. The 9:00 am Saturday scrimmage showed continued improvement in the offense and some key turnovers forced by the defense.

"We showed some enthusiasm on both sides of the line today, much more than we had on Wednesday," said WSU head football coach Ron McBride. "This morning was the time for the second and third units to make statements and I thought those two units played very well. We kept a lot of the first team players on the sideline today to give the others more playing time."

Starting quarterback Cameron Higgins (6-2, 195 Soph. / Hawai'i Kai, Hawai'i) was a perfect 7-7 passing for 82 yards and threw two touchdown passes. Chris Uribe (5-9, 175 Sr. WR / Hollister, California) had a 30-yard grab and Joe Collins (6-3, 175 Jr. WR / Seaside, California) was on the receiving end of a 15-yard catch. Uribe led all receivers during the scrimmage with five receptions for 39 yards.

"Cameron continues to become more and more of a leader. He's really matured over the past year and he has really had a pretty good week of practice." said McBride.

Pretty good as in 19-20 passing for 202 yards and four touchdowns in the two scrimmages this week. Higgins did not throw an interception.

Speaking of interceptions, the WSU quarterbacks had not throw one in any of the three Fall scrimmages, but freshman safety Nick Webb (6-4, 205 / Salt Lake City, Utah) put an end to that picking off two passes - one each from quarterbacks Brendon Doyle and Joel Hancock.

"Spider (nickname) had a big day in the defensive backfield," McBride said of Webb. "He went on his LDS Church mission right out of high school and returned last winter, so he hasn't played in a competitive game for nearly three years, but he's made tremendous improvement during Fall camp and should end up being a real competitor for us in the secondary."

The Wildcat coaching staff will spend the weekend evaluating the film and begin to sorting out the depth chart. The 'Cats will wrap up camp on Wednesday, August 20th then prepare for the season opener on Thursday, August 28 at home against Montana-Western. That game kicks off at 7:05 p.m. (MDT) in Stewart Stadium.
