Attacks kill 28 civilians in and around Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) — At least 28 people have been killed today in a wave of attacks in and around Baghdad.

The attacks took place as Iraq's prime minister was in Washington, meeting with President Barack Obama. The Iraqi leader has been looking for greater support from the U.S.-led coalition carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State militants.

The Islamic State group and other Sunni extremists carry out near-daily attacks targeting Iraq's security forces and the country's Shiite majority.

Also today, an official in a northern Iraqi province said militants have used suicide car bombs to try to break into the country's largest oil refinery over the past two days. He says Iraqi security forces repelled the attacks, and remain in control of the facility. According to the deputy governor of the province, more than 20 militants were killed during the clashes.
