W.Va. launches K-12 review of academic standards

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Board of Education is asking for a public review of the state's K-12 academic standards.

The board has sent the directive to the state's superintendent of schools, Michael Martirano, and the West Virginia Department of Education.

Gayle Manchin is president of the Board of Education. She says the review is intended to ensure that West Virginia has the best possible standards to prepare students for college and careers.

The so-called West Virginia Next Generation Standards are in their first year of full implementation.

The public review will involve the launch of a website accessible to every West Virginian. The website will offer an overview of current standards and an opportunity to comment.

West Virginia educators and others will then analyze the information.
