FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot who died after his small plane crashed in woods near the Flagstaff airport had just picked up donated blood from a community blood center.
Coconino County Sheriff's officials say the victim of the crash has been identified as 76-year-old Homer "Mac" McClure.
They say he picked up donated blood from the United Blood Services in Flagstaff about 9 p.m. Tuesday and took off from Pulliam Airport nearly 15 minutes later.
Residents in the area reported hearing the plane crash shortly afterward.
Authorities say the twin-engine plane went down about 5 miles southwest of the airport and left a debris field of more than 200 yards.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
