SEATTLE (AP) — High school juniors have been playing hooky this week, but not just to blow off steam. The students are protesting the state's new tests tied to the Common Core standards.
The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/1boiofK ) that no Nathan Hale High juniors took the test this week. Earlier this year school teachers and administrators said they would not administer the test in protest, but they eventually caved to pressure from the district.
The test is not required for juniors to graduate, which has prompted the Nathan Hale students as well as some juniors at three other Seattle high schools to opt out.
The test measures if students have mastered the Common Core standards in reading and math.
Similar exams have incited protests in Oregon, New Mexico and New York.
