LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police in Las Vegas say a 19-year-old was shot by a veteran K-9 officer responding to a report of a suspicious person and found a burglary in progress.
Officer Larry Hadfield says the wounded man, Richard Powell, was taken to University Medical Center in stable condition with a single gunshot wound following the 10:21 a.m. Wednesday shooting.
Hadfield says a gun was found next to Powell inside the home on Blue Jay Way.
The name of the officer wasn't immediately made public. He's on paid leave pending departmental and use-of-force investigations.
Hadfield says police were called by a neighbor concerned about a person in front of the home near Jones and Oakey boulevards.
That's near the College of Southern Nevada, Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital and the Opportunity Village campus.
