LA teachers ok 3-year contract granting 10 percent raises

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rank-and-file members of the union representing Los Angeles teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a three-year contract that will increase salaries 10 percent.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1Ek1dDR ) reported Friday that 25,047 union members cast ballots, with 97 percent voting yes.

The Board of Education must still approve the pact. That could happen as early as next week.

The agreement calls for 4 percent raises retroactive to last July and 2 percent retroactive to Jan. 1. Salaries will then rise 2 percent next July and 2 percent next January.

The raises are the first teachers in the nation's second-largest public school district have received in eight years.

The agreement with the Los Angeles Unified School District also calls for some class-size reductions and the hiring of more school counselors.
