Former Carson City mayor dies at age 79

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Former Carson City Mayor Marvin Teixeira has died after a lengthy illness.

News of his death Thursday was announced at the Board of Supervisors meeting. Teixeira died at his home. He was 79.

Mayor Bob Crowell tells the Carson Now website that Teixeira loved Nevada's capital city more than anyone he knows. He says a lot of Carson City's quality of life is because of the former mayor.

Teixeira served three-terms, from 1989-1996 and 2005-2008. He advocated the reintroduction of the V&T Railroad and flexibility in celebrating Nevada Day, an effort that led to a three-day holiday weekend each October.

Nevada Day draws thousands of people to Carson City.

In a 2007 tribute, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid described Teixeira as a "determined and tireless worker" for the city.
