Bill to allow guns in school lots up for vote

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A bill that would allow guns in parking lots outside Indiana's schools is headed to a vote in the House.

Changes to the bill added a provision that would allow guns to be stored out of sight in vehicles at school parking lots.

The Senate passed the bill 28-21 in January and the House is scheduled to vote on the measure Monday.

Supporters of the measure say it would protect parents who inadvertently commit a felony by bringing their guns while picking up their children. Opponents worry easier access to guns could promote school shootings.

The original bill was intended to ban gun buy-backs in Indiana, but lawmakers gutted that measure.

Only private funds or grants could be used to fund buy-backs if the current version of the bill passes.
