SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Jazz rookie --- Roger Powell Junior --- has been released from the team.

Several of Powell's teammates took it hard after hearing the news. That includes Dee Brown, one of his Illinois college pals, who was in tears.

Brown, also a Jazz rookie, said Powell deserved to be on the team, saying he worked harder than a lot of dudes.

Brown, Powell and another Jazz player, Deron Williams, all played together at Illinois.

Coach Jerry Sloan says the opening will allow the Jazz to add another player. He says the team needs more veteran players.

Powell appeared in just three games.
