Press ReleaseST. GEORGE, UTAH -- The Dixie State College of Utah baseball team defeated Grand Canyon University 9-8 Saturday night at Bruce Hurst field to cap off an undefeated run in the Pacific West Conference Little World Series.
The Antelopes, playing as the home team and down by five heading into the bottom of the ninth, scored four runs. A three-run home run by 1B Austin Stockfish cut the DSC lead to one. Matt Fox lined a sharp shot toward center, but all-conference player Brett Adams made a forward diving catch to record the championship-winning out.
Tony Nelson went 2-for 6 with a homer and was named the tournament's MVP after leading the Red Storm in RBIs. The championship's game winner Jayson Madson, Aaron Friend and Adams joined Nelson on the all-tourney team. Madson tossed 6.2 magnificent innings in relief of Tyson Bailey while Aaron Friend hit .583 over three games.
The Red Storm had 17 hits in the finale and ended the LWS scoring 53 runs is 22 innings played.
Grand Canyon earned a spot in the championship after defeating Hawaii Pacific 16 to 6 in eight innings. The Lopes finished 3-2 beating UPR-Mayaguez and HPU twice while dropping both contests to Dixie State by a combined score of 29-15.
In Saturday's consolation game, UPR Mayaguez routed UPR Rio Piedras 20-7. Check below for results for each tournament game.
Dixie State completed the season with an overall record of 33-19 and won its first ever Pacific West Conference regular-season championship.
