USU's Wilkinson named WAC Player of the Week

Press ReleaseLOGAN, Utah -­ Utah State men¹s basketball player Gary Wilkinson has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season it was announced by the league office on Monday.

Overall, it is the 12th time in the last four years that USU has received the weekly honor, including the fourth time this season as Wilkinson has won the award three times and junior guard Jared Quayle has won it once.

Wilkinson, a 6-9 senior forward from South Jordan, Utah (Salt Lake CC) led Utah State to a 2-0 record last week with a 78-59 win against New Mexico State and a 60-52 win against Louisiana Tech. Against NMSU, Wilkinson recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds as he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Against LTU, he scored 16 points and added five rebounds as he was 4-of-8 shooting, including 8-of-9 at the free throw line.

For the week, Wilkinson averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds, while shooting 69.2 percent from the field (9-13) and 94.1 percent from the free throw line (16-17).

On the season, Wilkinson is averaging 17.3 points and 7.4 rebounds and is shooting 60.8 percent from the field and 84.4 percent from the free throw line. He currently ranks second in the WAC in free throw shooting, is third in scoring and field goal shooting, and fourth in rebounding.

Utah State (23-1, 11-0) returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Idaho (10-12, 4-5) at 8 p.m. (MT).
