MILAN, Italy — Surrounded by cheering students and locals, Utah 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Committee Chairman Fraser Bullock carried the Olympic torch through downtown Milan on Thursday, sharing a moment he said he will never forget.
Bullock did his portion of the relay near a busy university area, where thousands of young people packed the streets, waving, cheering and stopping him for photos before his relay even began.
No matter how many people wanted to take a picture, he took a moment to do it. He knew in his heart they weren't there for him but for what he was holding and what it represents.
"The Olympic flame brings unity and hope and inspiration, and they just want to feel part of it," Bullock said.
Many of those lining the streets were students who had gathered simply to see the flame up close.
Bullock said connecting with young people was one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.
"That was unbelievable," he said. "Talk about the world coming together. We are one, we're unified and we have hope for the future. Look at all these young people."
After his relay, as he did before it, Bullock repeatedly stopped to greet spectators, pose for selfies and exchange high-fives.
"It's so exciting," he said. "They can feel the power of the flame, the power of the Olympics. 'Viva Italia,' right?" he said to the crowd surrounding him.
They all cheered in approval.
"There's nothing like the power of the Games to inspire that unity and hope," Bullock said.
He said he hopes young people in Utah will experience the same excitement he saw in Italy in 2034.
"Utah, it's coming. It is absolutely coming," he said. "But for right now, we get to celebrate Italy."
