ST. GEORGE — Significant sewer improvements are underway to enhance public health, protect the Virgin River and save Zion National Park thousands of dollars annually, beginning in August. Officials say delays related to contractor bidding pushed back the original timeline. The work will begin at the manhole near the "petting zoo" pullout and extend to the Grotto.
Zion National Park project manager and civil engineer Tyler Hoskins said the project is long overdue. Construction was expected to start this week, but the lowest bidder failed to meet qualifications, Hoskins said. The park is now working with the second-lowest bidder.
"We're comfortable with this new contractor," Hoskins said. "I've worked with them before and think it's going to be a very quick turnaround process."
Once work begins, one lane of the scenic drive will be closed between Zion Lodge and the Grotto. Traffic that includes shuttles and bicycles will still be allowed through with flaggers controlling flow.
"We want the public to know: You'll still be able to go up-canyon," Hoskins said. "There will be some delays, but access will be maintained."
