ST. ANTHONY — A man who died at the St. Anthony Sand Dunes following a UTV accident has been identified.
Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye identified the man as 60-year-old Kenneth Spomer of Corinne, in northern Utah. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.
According to Fremont County Sheriff Bart Quayle, deputies were called around 2:28 p.m. Sunday to a report of a vehicle accident at the sand dunes.
When they arrived, deputies found that two people, including Spomer, who was the driver, had accidentally flipped their RZR UTV from bumper to bumper.
Quayle says Spomer was not wearing a seatbelt, but the passenger was harnessed in. Spomer was pronounced dead at the scene and the other person involved refused transport to the hospital.
According to a Facebook post by the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to five crashes at the sand dunes over Memorial Day weekend, with one fatality confirmed and several others who were hospitalized.
"Unfortunately, we have one confirmed 1 ATV fatality and several others who remain hospitalized. Our hearts go out to the loved ones affected," says the Fremont County Sheriff's Office on Facebook. "If you are riding the sand this weekend – or any weekend – remember your flag, your helmet, to check over every razorback or hill, and always ride sober."
Correction: An earlier version incorrectly reported the accident happened on Saturday instead of Sunday.
