OREM — For the first time in school history, Canyon View baseball is bringing home the big one.
The Falcons capped off a dominant postseason run with a gritty 7-4 victory over Juab Saturday morning at UCCU Ballpark, securing the 3A state championship and etching their name into school history.
It was a game that had all the makings of a classic. And in the biggest moment of the season, Canyon View made all the right plays — just as head coach Jason Jacobsen said they would.
"I'm just going to tell our kids to just do what we've done all year: come and battle, put some good at-bats together, compete like crazy and we'll see what happens," Jacobsen said following Friday's semifinal win.
On Saturday, his team delivered.
After falling behind 4-1 in the top of the third inning, the Falcons (27-5) didn't blink. Instead, they answered back like champions.
Every player in the lineup stepped up, with all nine batters contributing to the pressure Canyon View put on Juab's pitching and defense.
The Falcons executed their small ball game plan, overcame a couple of base-running errors, and played near-flawless defense to hold off a talented Juab squad. Even with a couple of hiccups on the bases, the team executed in every other phase.
A game-sealing double play in the top of the seventh shut the door on Juab's hopes of a rally and set off a celebration years in the making. For a program that had never hoisted a state title trophy, this win meant everything.
Senior Brady Anderson led the performance, doing it on both sides of the ball. On the mound, he tossed over six innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four; and at the plate, he was a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in two of the team's seven runs.
Anderson's two-run single in the fourth inning was the spark the Falcons needed, cutting Juab's lead to 4-3 and shifting momentum back to Canyon View.
They tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead and never looked back. A solo run in the sixth gave them breathing room, and the defense took care of the rest.
Alongside Anderson, Caleb Paule had a good day, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Asher Slack added a hit, as well; and timely RBIs from multiple Falcons players proved the win wasn't about just one or two stars — it was the entire team buying in and delivering in the clutch.
Canyon View scored seven runs on eight hits, showcasing patience at the plate and smart base running, all while not committing a single error on defense.
Give credit to the Juab Wasps (25-7), who played with heart and grit despite seeing their 11-game win streak snapped in Friday's loss. They came out swinging on Saturday, putting up a three-run third inning that had them up 4-1 early. Juab racked up nine hits and gave Canyon View all it could handle for most of the afternoon.
But in the end, the Falcons simply wanted it more.
They played like they had something to prove, And now, they've proven it.
With the final out secured on the seventh-inning double play, gloves flew into the air and players rushed the field. Years of hard work, heartbreak, and near-misses had finally paid off.
Canyon View ends the season on a seven-game winning streak and walks off the field as the best team in 3A baseball. For a school and a community that's waited a long time for this moment — the wait was worth it.
