SPRINGDALE, Washington County — Headstones tilt sideways, with the names of the deceased barely visible. Yet, despite the ravages of time, the small pioneer cemetery in Springdale, Washington County, survives.

In an effort to preserve it, the Springdale's Historic Preservation Commission is working with the Springdale Town Council to nominate Pioneer Cemetery for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

"We should find out sometime later this year if that nomination has been successful. We're hopeful that this new policy will give the town a good basis for preserving this special place into the future," Niall Connolly, Springdale principal planner, said in an email to St. George News.

Additionally, the Town Council has approved a new policy for Pioneer Cemetery that includes the construction of a memorial wall.
