ST. GEORGE — The Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to over 100 calls and aided nearly 150 people in 2024, according to a year-end report shared with the Washington County Commission.

Washington County deputy Jacob Paul gave a public safety report to the commission at the county administration building in St. George Tuesday. He reported that the county's search and rescue team had responded to 117 calls for the year that involved a total of 148 people.

That's a drop from the 140 calls in 2023, but not a drop in actual search and rescue incidents as much as a change in who now responds to calls, Paul said.

Sometime in early 2024, Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby allowed search and rescue incidents that occurred within municipalities with fire departments with search and rescue capabilities to respond instead. This includes the St. George and Santa Clara-Ivins fire departments and Hurricane Valley Fire District.
