MAGNA — Westbound I-80 was closed for several hours in Salt Lake County due to a crash involving a driver traveling the wrong way on Monday afternoon, according to state troopers.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cam Roden said troopers received reports of a "reckless driver" who left the road to the right, did a U-turn and reentered the highway traveling the wrong way. The vehicle then collided head-on with a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer, he said.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transported via medical helicopter to a hospital in serious condition, Roden said. There were minor injuries to at least one occupant of the pickup truck.

Roden said impairment is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.

The highway remained closed for several hours Monday evening, but had reopened as of 10 p.m.
