HERRIMAN — "They don't know what slow means," Judge Memorial head coach Jeff Brzoska said of the Bulldogs' boys lacrosse team after Friday's 4A state championship.
In just its second year in UHSAA lacrosse, Judge Memorial dominated the playoffs and led two-time reigning state runner-up Sky View 7-1 early in the second quarter en route to a 13-8 win at Zions Bank Stadium.
"We wanted to come out fast. We want to get the first goal of the game," Brzoska said. "These guys, they don't know what slow means. They really, really don't. And so for them to come out here today and do what they did so early was just incredible."
Sophomore Rome Swanwick had a hat trick during the 7-1 run out of the gate and the Bulldogs led 9-2 at halftime. The Bobcats got three quick goals at the start of the fourth quarter to make it 12-7, but the Bulldogs held on to make Sky View the 4A runner-up for a third year in a row.
"Everybody stepped up as a leader — it's been beautiful," senior captain Sam Cowen said. "We've developed this mentality of staying 'Steady Eddie' throughout — not riding the highs and lows of the game — just staying where we are and being level-headed no matter what."
The boys lacrosse championships culminate Friday night at 8 p.m. MDT with Brighton taking on Park City in the 5A title game at Zions Bank Stadium.
