LEHI — The third quarter changed the course of the night as Lehi's defense held Herriman just enough to create the needed lead for an eventual 48-28 win for the Pioneers over the Mustangs.

With the game tied 21-21 at halftime, it appeared the night could go either way. But the Pioneers brought a different energy to the third quarter that changed the tone of the night.

It started when Lehi tight end Grayson Brousseau caught a 17-yard touchdown pass for the first score of the half, which marked the beginning of the Pioneers' victory. Herriman's ensuing possession didn't last long since Lehi intercepted the ball on the 33-yard line, and then followed it up with a 31-yard field goal by Lehi kicker Gavin Fenn.

The Mustangs used their next possession to get a touchdown to close the gap 31-28, but Lehi didn't waste any time as tight end Kaleb Moore caught a pass and escaped for a 64-yard touchdown to end the quarter. Lehi closed out the game with another touchdown and field goal to leave no doubt, and to finish with its highest-scoring game of the season.

"Our defense gave up too much in the first half, and they only gave up one in the second half," Lehi head coach Ed Larson said. "Those things kind of changed and got things rolling."

The Mustangs started off the night strong when quarterback Frederick Ta'ai threw a 43-yard touchdown pass for the early score. Lehi matched the effort with a 52-yard rushing touchdown from Devaughn Eka to add to the entertainment factor of the game.

The two teams traded more scores in the second quarter, including Lehi quarterback Jett Niu and running back Justice Cooper connecting for an 80-yard touchdown pass, to remain locked up at the halftime break.

Lehi will face American Fork next week, and Herriman will welcome Riverton at home.
