Fire in San Juan County is contained; Beaver fire continues to burn

BEAVER — Firefighters are working hard to put out two wildfires in southern Utah Friday in San Juan and Beaver counties.

The fire in San Juan County started Tuesday, when six counties were under Red Flag warnings.

A Red Flag warning means conditions for critical fire weather exist, stemming from low relative humidity and strong winds. Wayne, Garfield, Kane, San Juan, Sevier and Washington counties all had Red Flag warnings Tuesday.

Wildfire near Beaver continues to burn, covering more than 7,200 acres

The Thompson Ridge Fire has continued to grow since it started Aug. 5, covering 7,289 by Wednesday.Utah Fire Info said the Great Basin Team 5 took command of the fire Friday, and the fire is still 0% contained at 7,289 acres. However, some precipitation on Thursday helped reduce fire activity.The southern part of Beaver County is now under a closure order to allow ground and aviation crews to fight the fire.

San Juan County fire is 100% contained

Utah Fire Info announced Friday a wildfire in San Juan County is now 100% contained.The resources being used to fight the fire will be demobilized Saturday, except for a few crew members who will finish monitoring for hot spots.

Flames erupt in San Juan County wildfire

A wildfire sparked shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday about 5 miles southeast of Eastland in San Juan County, according to Utah Fire Info.The fire was first reported to be about 20 acres in size but by 6:30 p.m. had grown to more than 60 acres, Utah Fire Info reported. Structures are threatened, but it was not immediately clear if residential areas were in danger.Local, state and federal firefighters are cooperating to fight this fire with both air and ground resources. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Wildfire near Beaver grows to 2,700 acres

A wildfire that started 11 miles southeast of Beaver last Friday continues to grow this week.The Thompson Ridge Fire was measured at 1,100 acres early Tuesday, according to the Central Utah Fire Interagency. By 10:30 a.m., Fishlake National Forest spokeswoman Naomi Gordon said the fire had grown to 2,700 acres.There are no structures involved and the fire is 0% contained, according to the Moab Valley Fire Department. The department issued smoke alerts for Moab Valley Tuesday afternoon."Smoke from the Thompson Ridge fire can been seen in our valley today," the department said in a Facebook post. "It is likely that we will be experiencing these same conditions throughout the week."A Type 3 incident management team has been ordered and is expected to be added Tuesday night, Gordon said."Fire managers are focused on a confine and contain strategy using natural features and tactics that will provide the greatest chance for suppression success," a Central Utah Fire Interagency press release says.The interagency previously determined that the Thompson Ridge fire was sparked by lightning.— Sydnee Gonzalez
