COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Cottonwood Heights City Councilman Doug Petersen, 65, passed away Thursday.

Petersen began his City Council term in January 2020 and represented District 1. He died following a short battle with cancer.

"We are heartbroken to learn of Doug's passing. He was an amazing person, colleague and council member. We will sincerely miss our beloved friend, who could make anyone laugh at any moment. We send our condolences to his wife, Cathy, their children and grandchildren, and other family members," said Cottonwood Heights Mayor Mike Weichers in a statement.

In a Facebook post, Weichers said Petersen "had become one of my closest friends and allies these past 18 months."

"Doug could make anyone laugh at any moment and was dedicated to his constituents. There was nothing more important to Doug, other than his family, than helping our community increase its quality of life," Weichers added.
