SALT LAKE CITY — Real Salt Lake's veteran center-back duo is officially coming back in 2023 after Marcelo Silva signed a "multi-year" contract extension to remain with Justen Glad on the back line next year "and beyond."
"I am very happy and excited to continue my career with this team and this city," Silva said in a statement. "I look forward to continued success under Pablo (Mastroeni's) guidance, and I cannot wait to kick off the new season in front of our amazing fans."
Silva's current contract with RSL was up after the 2022 season and — while nothing was official until Friday — the two parties worked toward a new agreement as soon as the season ended in a first-round playoff loss to Austin FC.
The 33-year-old Uruguayan joined RSL as a midseason signing in 2017 and has been a consistent force on defense in recent years, including wearing the captain's armband for the majority of last season after Damir Kreilach went out with an injury.
The duo of Glad and Silva, combined with goalkeeper Zac MacMath, helped RSL earn 10 clean sheets in 2022, which was good for fourth place in all of MLS.
