MURRAY — A 16-year-old girl who was hit by a car last week has died from her injuries, according to her family.

The girl — who was later identified as Maya Staples — was walking east across Main Street at 2025 North in Centerville at 11:28 a.m. on Nov. 9, when she was struck by a southbound Toyota Highlander. Centerville police Chief Paul Childs said Staples was in a marked school crossing when she was hit, and was thrown 60 to 80 feet from the collision.

Staples sustained "very significant" injuries and was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray via ambulance.

Staples' sister on Wednesday confirmed that she died from her injuries.

The family will spend the next few days at the hospital for further testing to start the organ donation process, according to a statement posted by the family on a website created to provide updates on Staples' condition.

"We are devastated and we miss our cool, vibrant, passionate daughter, sister and friend," the family said in the statement. "We have had a sad but peaceful day, remembering Maya and talking about her, together."

"We felt such palpable feelings of warmth and love when Maya's friends and family gather in the waiting room to say goodbye to her," the statement continued. "We got to spend time with so many amazing kids! To all of Maya's sweet friends, thank you so much for being here with us today. You remind us of our girl with your unique, youthful energy. We love you!"

The family created a GoFundMe* page to raise money to help with medical expenses.
