SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding its 192nd Semiannual General Conference Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 2. This blog summarizes the key points from the Saturday morning session.

President Russell M. Nelson — What is true?

President Russell M. Nelson ended the Saturday morning session with what appeared to be a response to recent allegations that church policy has resulted in the mishandling of child sexual abuse cases. He delivered his remarks while sitting."Let me be perfectly clear: any kind of abuse of women, children or anyone is an abomination to the Lord. He grieves and I grieve whenever anyone is harmed. He mourns and we all mourn for each person who has fallen victim to abuse of any kind," President Nelson said.

— Trent Toone (@tbtoone) October 1, 2022President Nelson went on to explain that abusers are accountable to the law and also the wrath of God.President Nelson stated that the Church of Jesus Christ has taken extensive measures to protect people from abuse — especially children. He pointed people toward the aids on the church website and the church's guidelines on abuse.He advised members of the church to be alert to abuse and help and protect those who might be in danger."The Savior will not tolerate abuse. And as his disciples, neither can we," President Nelson said.Then he spoke about truth and that all truth comes from God, and those who do not speak truth will also face divine consequences.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband — 'This day'

"This day" is a phrase used often in the Book of Mormon to bring attention to teachings, Elder Ronald A. Rasband, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said. He said general conference has a similar purpose and that what he feels is important for "this day" is renewing a commitment to the Book of Mormon.Elder Rasband said it is through reading a 1970 vintage edition of the Book of Mormon through a challenge as a missionary led him to gain a witness that Jesus Christ is his Savior."With each reading of the Book of Mormon, front to back, I was filled with a profound love for the Lord. I felt a deeply rooted witness of the truth of his teachings," Elder Rasband said.

Nelson he has given copies of the Book of Mormon to many world leaders while testifying of Jesus Christ."I have watched as these copies of the Book of Mormon have been clutched in the hands of those who have received them from our prophet of God. There could be no greater gift," Elder Rasband said.He invited members to share the Book of Mormon with everyone, opening their minds, and suggested sharing through the Gospel Library App and including a testimony of how the book has helped them."They need the words of the Lord found in this book. They need answers to the questions of everyday life and of eternal life to come. They need to know of the covenant path laid out before them and the Lord's abiding love for them. Elder Hugo Montoya — The eternal principle of love

Elder Hugo Montoya, general authority seventy, spoke about the eternal principle of love through the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving your neighbor."We are willing to help each other because we love each other, and my brother's needs become my needs and mine become his. No matter what language my brother speaks or what country he comes from, we love each other because we are brothers, children of the same father (in heaven)," Elder Montoya said.

— The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (@Ch_JesusChrist) October 1, 2022He explained that loving was more than getting out of the way or noticing someone in need."Let us take advantage of every opportunity to help our neighbor, even if it is the first and only time we meet him in this life," Elder Montoya said.He went on to state that he believes that the reason love is involved in the first commandments is because of what people mean to God. And as a father himself, Elder Montoya explained that he knows the tricky balance of trying to be available when his children need him at all times and knowing that there are things they have to go through themselves.

Elder Rafael E. Pino — Let doing good be our normal

Elder Rafael E. Pino, general authority seventy, discussed customs and traditions from a religious perspective.He opened his remarks by recalling instances where he and his wife encountered new traditions while traveling on assignment for the church, such as eating chili on coconut in Mexico and sugar on avocado in Brazil.In addition to the customs and traditions that come from an individual's family or country of origin, Pino said it's also important to reflect on the personal religious habits that we consider normal.

"However, exaltation is something much more transcendental than a sense of taste; it is a topic related to eternity."Elder Pino invited members of the church to let the "normal" things in their lives be those things that keep them on the covenant path. He listed four habits that should be normal for members:

Personal and family study of the scriptures

Personal and family prayer

Attending sacrament meeting weekly

Participate frequently in temple work and in doing family history

"How do we feel when we hear these four things? Are they part of our normal lives?" Elder Pino asked. "In the scriptures, we find a great model; in Mosiah 5:15, it says: 'I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works.' I love these words, because we know that the things that become normal in our lives are those that we repeat again and again. If we are steadfast and immovable in doing good, our customs will be in accordance with the principles of the gospel, and they will help us to stay on the covenant path."— Sydnee Gonzalez

Elder Dale G. Renlund — A Framework for personal revelation

Revelation from God comes following specific guidelines, Elder Dale G. Renlund, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said using an example of the necessity for pilots to follow air traffic controllers."When we operate within the framework, the Holy Ghost can unleash astonishing insight, direction and comfort. Outside of that framework, no matter our brilliance or talent, we can be deceived and crash and burn," Elder Renlund said.

"Only the prophet receives revelation for the Church. It would be 'contrary to the economy of God' for others to receive such revelation, which belongs on the prophet's runway." @DaleGRenlund #GeneralConference

Nelson, and church members can only receive revelation within their own purview.Elder Renlund told members they are promised they will receive revelation when they ask and said members should ask for what is good and believe they will receive. He said they can seek revelation with confidence about where to live, career paths and who to marry — decisions where the responsibility is theirs."Feasting on the words of Christ, as found in the scriptures, stimulates personal revelation," Elder Renlund said.When a member has received personal revelation already, they can be assured that God already answered the question. Elder Renlund gave an example of asking to be forgiven."If we have repented, been filled with joy and peace of conscience, and received a remission of our sins, we do not need to ask again but can trust the answer God has already given," he said.

Sister Tracy Y. Browning — Seeing more of Jesus Christ in our lives

Sister Tracy Y. Browning, the second counselor in the Primary general presidency and the first Black woman to speak in any general conference session of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, compared her dependence on her glasses in order to see to her dependence on Jesus Christ in order to clearly see the path forward.She explained that every morning when she wakes up, the world is out of focus, even her own familiar husband, so reaches for glasses to help make sense of the world. Browning stated that this action illustrated her daily dependence on Christ for focus and guidance.She went on to list a number of tools she uses to improve her spiritual vision: the words and teachings of Christ, daily prayer, regular temple attendance, and weekly ordinance of the sacrament.

Now that Christ fulfilled that law, the sacrifice is submitting your will.When people become aggressively interrogative about her reasons for being in the church and abstaining from certain things, Browning uses it as an opportunity to put on her spiritual glasses and examine her motivations.She always finds that her motivations are guided by a desire to see more like Christ so she can be more like Christ."The Savior can also be our compass and our pilot as we steer through both the calm and the turbulent waters of life," she said.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf — Jesus Christ is the strength of youth

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles, spoke directly to young men and young women and announced a new "For the Strength of Youth" guide with the subtitle "A Guide for Making Choices." The guide is now in multiple languages online, and Elder Uchtdorf urged youth to get their own copy."I always keep a copy in my pocket close to my heart, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards," he said. "It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day."Elder Uchtdorf stressed that while "For the Strength of Youth" is a guide for making choices, it doesn't make those choices for the individuals reading it — nor does it provide a "yes" or "no" to every choice youth may face.

President Dallin H. Oaks — Helping the poor and distressed

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gave $906 million in 2021 through donations in 188 countries, President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency said. Members also contributed 6 million hours of aid and served through callings in the church and personal donations to charitable organizations.President Oaks said that most of the humanitarian work done throughout the world is not done through the church, or by any singular organization, and giving to others is a principle in many religions. He encouraged members to be more aware of and thankful for the service of others."The Church of Jesus Christ is committed to serving those in need, and it is also committed to cooperating with others in that effort," President Oaks said.

"In more than 38 years as an apostle, and over 30 years of professional employment, I have seen many generous efforts by organizations and persons … There are uncounted examples of such humanitarian service throughout the world." @OaksDallinH | #GeneralConference

All of this is part of God's work for his children," President Oaks said.He gave examples of individuals who saw a need and stepped up to fill it, helping those in need receive education or medical care, and said God is inspiring people of faith worldwide to serve."These examples do show that God inspires many organizations and individuals to do much good. It also shows that more of us should be recognizing the good done by others and supporting it as we have the time and means to do so," President Oaks said.
