TEMPE, Ariz. — In Week 4 of action, six teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, including two undefeated teams in the Top 10, lost over the weekend. As a result, there was a shakeup in the new rankings that were released Sunday afternoon.
Locally, both BYU and Utah got a win over the weekend and remained in the top 20.
Utah, which defeated an outmatched Arizona State team 35-13 on the road to start Pac-12 play, inched up to No. 12 in the AP Top 25, just one spot higher than its previous spot of No. 13 last week. The Utes got the win but suffered what is expected to be a season-ending injury to the team's leading tight end Brant Kuithe.
The Utes remain the second-highest ranked team from the Pac-12 and the highest-ranked one-loss team in the country, one spot ahead of fellow one-loss Pac-12 foe Oregon. USC moved up to No. 6 after grinding out a 17-14 win over Oregon State in Corvallis, and Washington moved up to No. 15 with a win over Stanford.
After a bounce-back effort by BYU, the Cougars stood still at No. 19, the same as after its previous loss to Oregon the week before. The Cougars got star wide receiver Puka Nacua back in the lineup, only to see him suffer another injury that forced him to leave the game early in BYU's win over Wyoming.
Arkansas and Oklahoma found themselves on the losing end of Week 4 action, snapping their undefeated streaks and dropping them out of the Top 10. As a result of their losses, Tennessee and North Carolina State moved into the Top 10. Oklahoma, which fell to Kansas State, moved down to No. 18 and Arkansas, which lost to Texas A&M, moved down to No. 20.
At the top of the rankings ahead of Week 5 action remains Georgia, with 55 first-place votes after an unconvincing win over Kent State. Behind the Bulldogs is No. 2 Alabama, followed by No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan, and No. 5 Clemson.
Here's the complete AP Top 25 for Week 5 of the 2022 college football season.
