AROUND THE BEEHIVE — For those who are just joining us after the first week of the 2022 Utah high school football season, this is the space where we like to focus on the players who made some of the biggest plays and best performances from the weekend.
After Week 1, one performance stands out above the rest: the Kanab tandam of Griffin Bone and Kason Janes.
The quarterback-receiver duo combined for a pair of touchdowns Friday night, including a 23-yard strike as time expired that helped the Cowboys snap a 12-year losing streak to rural rival Beaver, 22-21.
"Not how we drew it up at all. But one to remember," Kanab coach JR Quarnberg told the Deseret News. "We had to overcome some serious adversity as some players stepped up and made huge plays.
"Obviously Kason Janes, but Parker Franklin ran hard for over 100 yards behind our offensive line. Two young players, a freshman (Hayden Gubler) and a sophomore (Troy Federkeil) came into the game and played hard physical football for us. We are excited to keep getting better."
The ending of Kanab-Beaver last night was must-see TV, with @KanabCowboys snapping a 12-year losing streak to the Beavers on the final play of the game.#UTHSFBpic.twitter.com/9J9rNBfZU7

Beaver pulled ahead 21-14 on Bodie Wheatley's 11-yard run with 2:08 remaining, but that left plenty of time on the clock for Bone. The 5-foot-9 junior marched the Cowboys the length of the field in the final two minutes, most of it with no timeouts as he worked the clock and the field with the precision and poise of a veteran.
On Bone's final pass of the night, the junior found reliable target Janes for a 23-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone as time expired. But rather than kick the PAT and go to overtime, the Cowboys lined up with Franklin in the backfield, and the senior with over 1,000 career yards dived into the end zone for the emphatic 22-21 victory.
Here are 10 other performances that caught our eye.
McCae Hillstead, QB, Skyridge
Starting in the first game of his third season as the Falcons' starting quarterback, the Utah State commit threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the top-ranked Falcons stormed past Fremont,52-7.
And how about McCae Hillstead, the 3-year starter with 5 TDs (3 passing, 2 rushing) in @skyridgefb's win over Fremont?

Luke Daynes, WR/K, Stansbury
We love a good receiver-kicker, and Daynes was on fire Friday night, catching one of four touchdown passes from Stansbury quarterback Ezra Harris to go along with a perfect 10-for-10 effort on extra points as the Stallions scored 42 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 72-13 rout of visiting Pine View.
Gavin Turner, WR, Morgan
The senior wide out caught six passes for 102 yards, including a 16-yard pass from Nick Despain to open the scoring, as the Trojans rushed for four touchdowns and added a safety in a 37-14 win over Bear River.
Hunter Johnson, QB, Snow Canyon
After throwing for 2,102 yards and 24 touchdowns a year ago, the Warriors' quarterback picked up where he left off Friday night, completing 15-of-24 passes for 242 yards and six touchdowns — all in the first half — in the 4A Warriors' 41-0 romp of 5A Northridge.
