SALT LAKE CITY — Freshman quarterback Peter Costelli has entered his name into the transfer portal, according to a report by 247Sports Tuesday.

Costelli was the top recruit to sign with the Utes in the latest recruiting class and enrolled in January to be ready for spring camp. But with the emergence of sophomore Cam Rising as the team's starter and Texas transfer Ja'Quinden Jackson locking up the backup role, Costelli's potential to play became severely limited.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said before the season started that the team's plan was to redshirt Costelli, which meant he could still play in up to four games this season while keeping his eligibility intact. But Costelli never took a live snap in a Utah uniform this season as the team's fourth option at the position.

Costelli showed well in the spring game but wasn't able to break into the top of the depth chart. And with Utah expected to sign two quarterbacks in the upcoming recruiting class — the NCAA early signing day period begins Dec. 15 — the room is only going to get more crowded.

Although Costelli has entered his name in the transfer portal, he's still enrolled at the university. But now that his name is in the portal, other schools are able to contact Costelli.
