CEDAR CITY — A man who authorities say exchanged gunfire with officers in Cedar City Thursday after he told police dispatch he attempted to shoot his father was booked into jail Friday after he was released from a hospital in St. George.

Brian Rush Peters, 40, of Cedar City, was booked into Iron County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and felony discharge of a firearm, according to jail records.

Cedar City police responded to a report at 4254 W. 375 North on a call that shots shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a police affidavit filed in 5th District Court along with Peters' arrest. According to the report, police dispatch received two calls from the residence, one of Peters' father and another from Peters.

Peters' father said his son was drunk and tried to shoot him with a .22-caliber revolver, according to the affidavit. Peters called and told dispatch "he tried to shoot his dad," the report continued. The shots "narrowly" missed striking the family member, the document stated.

When officers arrived on scene, they said Peters fired "at least one shot at a uniformed officer," according to the Iron/Beaver/Garfield Critical Incident Task Force.

"Peters then emerged from the home and presented a threat to officers. Shots were fired before Mr. Peters was taken into custody," the task force said in the statement.

Peters was struck by at least one shot, the affidavit stated. In a statement, task force officials said the man was taken to Cedar City Hospital before he was airlifted to St. George Regional Hospital. He was released Friday and immediately brought back to Iron County to be booked into jail.

No other injuries were reported in the incident to police or residents. It's not clear how many officers were involved and what agencies they were from.

Some nearby homes were evacuated during the incident, and an elementary school was placed on lockdown. Traffic on state Route 56 was also stopped briefly.
