NEW HARMONY, Washington County — One person died and another was seriously injured in a crash involving three vehicles in Washington County on Sunday morning, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The man who died was identified by UHP Monday as Robert McCracken, 77, of South Jordan.

A driver of a Chevrolet Cruze was northbound on I-15 in the middle lane about 9:48 a.m. when he fell asleep and drifted to the right, UHP said in a press release. The Cruze drifted into the driver-side rear tires of a commercial semitruck. The driver of the Cruze lost control and came to a stop in a travel lane, and the semitruck slowed to avoid hitting him.

A silver Nissan Rogue failed to reduce its speed and rear-ended the trailer of the commercial vehicle, UHP said. McCracken, who was driving the Rouge, was killed on impact. The passenger in the car was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the semitruck was injured, UHP said.
